Jörg was out of town this week being Herr Doktor of theoretical blah-blah (i.e. stuff that is so smart, it's sexy in a confusingly greek-notated way). After 24 hours of single parenthood, and the return of Annika's nocturnal wanderings (I spoke too soon, I guess), my judgment was seriously impaired. Maybe also due to the discovery of the vodka tonic thanks to my backyard neighbor (thanks, Gina!).
Whatever the reason, I suddenly decided that we had to get out of the house. Had to. I decided to check out Priceline for the first time, because I love William Shatner. Not enough, I guess, to check Priceline out when he was actually doing the commercials, but enough to remember him when I was desperately looking for an escape from the four walls of our single-parent house.
And what do you know? The thing actually works! 50 bucks will get you a 2 1/2 star hotel 12 miles from downtown Chicago!* Of course, smart little me managed to book the room in a way that extended my single parenthood by another 48 hours. And smart little me loaded the girls in the car with no clear idea of what, exactly, we were going to do together in the Big City.
But, as usual, when your general strategy is just to say "yes" as often as possible, these past 2 days were lovely.
Annika and Frankie's Big List of Firsts
*We once needed a place to stay when Annika was seeing her docs in Chicago. The transplant house (Kohl's House) and the Ronald McDonald House were both full, but it turns out the hospital has an arrangement with one of the downtown hotels to give patients' families free rooms. It sounded like a sweet deal to me, until we arrived and I discovered that parking alone at the hotel was $30. Still a sweet deal, I know, but spending $30 for a room when you're having lots of fun on vacation and spending $30 when you're sleeping between doctors' appointment (not to mention the traffic nightmares)... Well, I really can be an ungrateful woman sometimes.
